Our New Nero

Today, Iran burns.

Riots. Secret police. Beatings. Rigged elections. Suppression of journalists. Oppression of people.

Interesting times, indeed. It seems that the politics of Iran, with its conservative, religious power-base being challenged by the rapidly modernizing and secularizing popular society, will be prophetic of future contests for power and place. The place, it seems, for religion as a guiding light of political reform is under threat. The Guardian Council have been challenged, and have blinked. A piece of body language that will not go unnoticed by the restless masses.

While the President flies to Moscow to speak with Medvedev, his city, and his country, are alight with the flames of discontent.

Armadinejad is fiddling. Tehran is on fire.
